Dog Waving Paw

Thank you for your interest in becoming a foster for Pits & Pals K9 Rescue! We appreciate you and without fosters we would not be able to rescue animals. This makes YOU one of the most important people in rescue.

There is an immense satisfaction that goes into knowing you helped save a life. Many of the animals we get can be scared of humans, they have been abused or neglected, or come with no history at all. To be able to watch a dog flourish with love, care and boundaries is a wonderful thing.

You might think it would be hard to do all of this and then see them go to another family but if you keep all the dogs you save, you can’t save more. There is an overwhelming sense of joy when you see your foster dog continue to grow and thrive with their forever family.

Becoming a foster is a fulfilling experience that can make a huge difference in the life of an animal.

While we prefer that a foster home be located within the Sacramento area (including Roseville, Elk Grove, Folsom), it is possible to have a foster who lives more than 30 miles from Sacramento. Fosters are required to attend once per month adoption events (provided the dog has been medically cleared by the vet) and to transport the foster dog to/from veterinary appointments, all of which are held in the Sacramento area. In some circumstances, we may be able to provide volunteer transport but prefer that the foster transport the dog. In addition, we will need enough notice to make the volunteer transport arrangements. If you do not feel this will be a hindrance, please continue with the application.

What fosters can expect from us:

  • We will provide you, as much as we can, with everything you will need for your foster dog. This includes the vetting (including medications and needed supplements), basic care items like food and treats, crates, and toys. If and when the rescue has them on hand, we will also provide blankets, beds, and any other items as needed.

  • We will work to get the foster dog placed as quickly as possible. Attending all adoption events and fundraiser events will help the foster dog be seen and increase their chances of finding their forever home.

  • We will provide you with support and appreciation, as well as training if necessary. Without fosters, we know we are unable to rescue dogs.

Some of what we expect from fosters:

  • The most important thing we expect is that you provide the foster dog with a healthy and loving home environment. We expect that you will treat your foster dog as you would treat your own dog and remember, we are training these dogs to be indoor, family dogs.

  • It is very important that you communicate any questions or concerns for behavior, health or anything else with us. This allows us to arrange training or medical care when necessary. We also require bi-weekly updates with photos and videos to share with the public to entice adopters.

  • We expect that you will commit to your foster dog until it is adopted. So, if you say you will take three puppies and they are pulled from a shelter with that understanding, we will expect you to take those puppies and keep them until they are adopted or until another foster home can be found.

  • We want you to address any concerns with us. You will be provided with much more information and training during the foster home check.
