Some rescue stories are about finding a forever home.

Buddy Bear's story is about making sure he knows he already has one.

At 15 years old, Buddy Bear found himself in a place no senior dog should ever have to be: alone in a shelter after being surrendered by the family he had spent his life with.

We saw the post about him. Then we watched his video.

And watched it again.

And again.

There was something about this sweet old boy that we simply couldn't shake. We were heartbroken, angry, and devastated thinking about how confusing it must have been for him. After giving his entire life to his family, Bear needed them more than ever—and suddenly, everything he knew was gone.

The reality was that Pits & Pals was already stretched thin. We didn't have extra space. We didn't have extra resources. Taking on another dog, especially a 15 year old senior who would need hospice and ongoing medical care, wasn't the practical decision.

But sometimes rescue isn't about what's practical.

Sometimes it's about looking at one scared old dog and knowing that, if you have the ability to change the ending of his story, you have to try.

So we said yes to Buddy Bear.

Bear will spend the rest of his life as a Pits & Pals hospice pal, but hospice doesn't mean we're giving up on him. He will receive veterinary care and medical treatment to address his needs, manage any pain or discomfort, and give him the best quality of life possible. We will work with his veterinary team to learn more about his health and make sure his care is centered around what is best for him.

We're not asking Bear to overcome anything. We're not asking him to become anything. And we're not asking him to wait for someone to choose him, we did.

His days now are about comfort. Medical care. Soft beds. Good meals. Gentle hands. Pain management when needed. Being spoiled absolutely rotten. And being surrounded by people who will make sure he never has to wonder whether he's wanted again.

We don't know whether we will be lucky enough to have Bear for days, months, or longer. Hospice rescue comes with that uncertainty. What we do know is that the amount of time doesn't determine the value of saving a life.

Bear deserved better.

He deserved dignity.

He deserved proper medical care.

He deserved to feel safe.

And after 15 years on this earth, he deserved a family who wouldn't walk away when loving him became hard.

We can't rewrite Buddy Bear's past, but we have the privilege of writing his final chapter, and we're going to make it a beautiful one.

From this moment forward, Buddy Bear is safe.

He is cared for.

He is wanted.

He is family.

And when his time eventually comes, he will leave this world knowing exactly what it feels like to be deeply, completely loved.
